Issendilen is located in Tassili n'Ajjer, about 120 km as the crow flies south of the regional capital, Illizi, and 150 km north-west of Djanet. Its altitude is 1,070 m.The village is an oasis nestled in a valley bounded by high cliffs.
The only real water source in the region, the Iherir valley has been classified by UNESCO as World Heritage (1982) and Man and Biosphere Reserve (1986). It is also considered a « wetland of global interest » by the Ramsar convention.
